The Spokane-based Applied Sciences Laboratory (ASL) of the Institute for Shock Physics (ISP) at Washington State University is seeking a R&D Engineer (Administrative/Professional staff member) in the area of advanced materials research. The advanced materials research will be focused on development and characterization of novel alloys and composites.
The overall responsibilities for this position are as follows:
Participate in the design and execution of a broad range of experimental projects, including fabrication, testing and characterization of alloys and composites
Design, construction, and maintenance of process equipment and testing systems.
Contribute effectively to all aspects of the research projects and assist research faculty.
Maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration of the experimental facilities; ordering components, equipment and supplies; interactions with the machine shops and suppliers; working effectively in a team setting.
Conduct and analyze research experiments and prepare advanced-level reports. Because of the diverse nature of the research activities and the facilities in the Institute, the above list should be viewed as a representative, but not a complete, list of responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for creative, self-motivated individuals who have the ability and desire to pursue solutions to challenging problems in a fast paced research environment.
Only applicants who are in the US and meet the following requirements will be considered: A degree in Physical Sciences (preferably in materials science or mechanical engineering) with good experimental background in materials processing, testing and characterization.
A minimum 5 years of relevant experience in an academic or R&D environment (a masterÂ’s degree preferred).
Hands-on experience with vacuum equipment, high vacuum systems, high temperature furnaces, temperature control and induction heating.
Hands-on experience in universal testing machines and servo-hydraulic equipment.
Knowledge of lab software such as: Labview, data analysis, electronic data collection.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office—Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
Strong self-motivation and the ability to think and work independently.
Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively as a team player.
Be able to lift at least 50 lbs. because of the need to move and assemble various experimental components and equipment. Must have good motor skills, be able to climb up and down stairs in the laboratory, and move equipment as necessary. Be able to stand or sit for long hours. Preferred skills include: Hands-on experience with optical microscopy and metallographic sample preparation.
Hands-on experience with the processing of metal-matrix composites.
Hands-on experience with brazing or metal-ceramic joining. Preference will be given to U. S. citizens because of the need to interact with personnel at the National Laboratories, and to occasionally access information restricted to U.S. citizens. However, applications will be accepted from all non-U.S. citizens lawfully authorized to work in the U.S.

The Applied Sciences Laboratory (ASL) is a self sustaining, contract research organization that conducts a broad range of applied research projects for government agencies and private corporations, including the development of commercial applications.
ASL combines the creativity of academic research with the agility and customer focus of private industry. ASLÂ’s focus is on applied research and technology related to energy, national security, and advanced materials and sensors. The scientific underpinnings for these projects are in materials science, optical science, surface chemistry, computational modeling and simulations, and solid mechanics. THE INSTITUTE FOR SHOCK PHYSICS
More than fifty years of research innovations and scientific activities in understanding the dynamic response of materials at Washington State University provide the foundation for the research activities in ASL. A multidisciplinary research organization within the College of Sciences, ISP undertakes a broad range of fundamental scientific activities related to understanding condensed matter response under dynamic and static high pressures. Continuum-to-atomic level understanding is the pervading theme of research activities that emphasize integration of innovative experiments with theoretical and computational advances. Multidisciplinary efforts that combine expertise in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, and Mechanical Engineering are underway to address exciting and challenging scientific problems. In addition to the research faculty within the Institute, students and faculty from several departments within the Colleges of Sciences and Engineering participate in the InstituteÂ’s research projects. State-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities are available for studying physical and chemical phenomena over a large range of length and time scales.
