The Spokane-based Applied Sciences Laboratory (ASL) of the Institute for Shock Physics (ISP) at Washington State University is seeking a Process Engineer (Administrative/Professional staff member) in the area of advanced materials research. The advanced materials research will be focused on development and characterization of novel alloys and composites.
The overall responsibilities for this position are as follows: Participate in the execution of a broad range of experimental projects, including fabrication and characterization of alloys and composites. Operation and maintenance of process equipment, particularly melting and casting of reactive metals. Maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration of the experimental facilities; ordering components, materials and supplies; interactions with the machine shops and suppliers; working effectively in a team setting. Conduct and analyze research experiments and prepare reports as appropriate. Document the details of process steps and develop written procedures. Because of the diverse nature of the research activities and the facilities in the Institute, the above list should be viewed as a representative, but not a complete, list of responsibilities. QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for creative, self-motivated individuals who have the ability and desire to pursue solutions to challenging problems in a fast paced research environment.
Only applicants who are in the US and meet the following requirements will be considered for this entry level position: A degree in Physical Sciences (preferably in materials science, metallurgy or mechanical engineering) with good experimental background. Experience with general laboratory equipment and environment, and ability to operate various laboratory equipment. Ability to perform technical laboratory work with consistency and attention to detail. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office—Word, Excel, Powerpoint. Strong self-motivation and the ability to think and work independently. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively as a team player. Be able to lift at least 50 lbs. because of the need to move and assemble various experimental components and equipment. Must have good motor skills, be able to climb up and down stairs in the laboratory, and move equipment as necessary. Be able to stand or sit for long hours. Preferred skills include: Hands-on experience with vacuum equipment, high vacuum systems, high temperature furnaces, temperature control and induction heating. Hands-on experience with general machine shop practice and TIG welding. Knowledge of lab software such as: Labview, data analysis, electronic data collection. Knowledge of metallography, mechanical testing and related equipment.Preference will be given to U. S. citizens because of the need to interact with personnel at the National Laboratories, and to occasionally access information restricted to U.S. citizens. However, applications will be accepted from all non-U.S. citizens lawfully authorized to work in the U.S.
