Federal Defender Trial Attorney (Spokane, WA)

Federal Defenders of Eastern Washington and Idaho is now accepting applications for a Trial Attorney position in Spokane, Washington. The attorney will be based in Spokane, Washington with primary practice before the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Washington in Spokane and United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Federal Defenders of Eastern Washington and Idaho is the Community Defender Organization (see 18 U.S.C. ยง3006A(g)(2)(B)) for the Eastern District of Washington and the Northern District of Idaho. The organization is a non-profit corporation funded by a grant from the federal government and are not government employees. The offices provide defense services in federal criminal cases and related matters appointed by the court. The organization's main office is in Spokane, Washington, with a branch office in Yakima, Washington.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Qualified applicants must have a commitment to the representation of indigent persons. The successful applicant must possess excellent writing, computer-assisted legal research and advocacy skills, and the ability to understand and manage complex factual and legal issues. Applicants must also possess the ability to communicate effectively. The caseload is varied covering drug offenses, gun offenses, immigration offenses, offenses (primarily "violent crimes") arising out of Native American tribal lands and a variety of fraud offenses and other miscellaneous federal crimes. Regular day trips and some overnight travel is required. A trial attorney may not engage in the private practice of law.
REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS: J.D. degree from an accredited law school; at least 5 years of criminal trial experience preferred; must be an active member in good standing of a state bar: Washington State Bar not presently required, but encouraged. Fluent in Spanish is preferred but not required. Experience in federal court as a criminal law practitioner is also strongly preferred but not required.
SALARY/BENEFITS: This is a full-time position. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Health coverage (presently full coverage for employee, partial payment for dependents--percentage paid by employer depends on yearly budget); pension plan for full-time employees after 6 months employment. Salary is payable by direct deposit.
