OPENING: This bulletin will be used to hire one full-time (40 hr/wk) regular Microbiologist in our Laboratory.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4047.70 – $5167.15 per month (not including longevity increases). Starting salary is normally $4047.70.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: This position operates and maintains a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3) lab that fulfills the requirements necessary for CDC Select Agent Program approval at Lab Response Network Reference Lab level (for environmental and clinical samples). This includes maintaining skills to provide Clinical (STD testing and Tuberculosis testing) and Water testing. Major responsibilities include: establishes and performs Lab PHEPR (Public Health Emergency Preparedness & Response) functions for Eastern Washington and provides surge capacity for Washington State Public Health Lab and North Idaho; performs, interprets and reports Laboratory Response Network (LRN) validated procedures on specimens to rule-in, rule-out or confirm high consequence pathogens (organisms of bioterrorism interest); conducts in-service/trainings for internal staff and external partners; as Biosafety & Biosecurity Officer for the Lab, develops and updates plans for the BSL3; performs and reports out High Complexity testing for clinical lab services; reviews test results and QC for work performed by the Lab Technician; and maintains ability to set up, record results and report out drinking water tests, as surge and emergency back-up.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor¡¦s Degree in Laboratory Science including training in Medical Terminology plus four (4) years of microbiology laboratory experience and certification in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) or Medical Technology (MT) (ASCP) is required. Must meet qualification for high complexity testing and reporting test results as required under CLIA regulations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILTIES: Knowledge of data and records management to be able to follow and enforce proper records management for procedures established by regulation, including HIPAA compliance. Knowledge and skill to work with computerized data handling, networked electronic data exchange systems, Microsoft Office suite and the ability to learn new software quickly. Ability to develop and implement new elements, assist in defining program goals and objectives, and establish protocols; develop and update procedures; accomplish program objectives; review and interpret program guidelines, regulations and requirements; effectively plan, assign and evaluate the work of subordinates, including delegating responsibility and authority; and carry out policy directives of governing authority in an effective and timely manner. Ability to communicate and express ideas effectively ¡V orally and in writing. Ability to organize and produce research reports. Ability to solve problems and use independent judgment to deal with a variety of variables in situations where immediate attention may be required.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: This person is regularly required to sit, stand and move around. Communication skills to interact effectively with people and comprehend and process verbal communication. Requires visual acuity to read small print, the ability to discern colors and odors, and the ability to work with chemicals smells in the laboratory. Ability to bend, twist and stoop on a regular basis and lift or carry up to 20 pounds on an occasional bases.
